  • The photo shows Ms. Doan Thi Phuong tending to a section of her family's vegetable garden. Ms. Phuong is carefully planting new seedlings into a thoroughly tilled garden bed. This soil has been improved by mixing in homemade organic fertilizer. This fertilizer is processed from chicken manure, vegetable scraps, rice husks, and beneficial microorganisms, increasing the soil's porosity and nutrients, thus ensuring the growth of the crops according to ecological farming practices.
  • Ms. Doan Thi Phuong also proactively makes her own biological pesticide from readily available ingredients such as ginger, garlic, and chili. This biological pesticide is used to spray the various crops in her garden, effectively and safely controlling pests while ensuring clean produce and no harm to the environment.

This model is implemented by Ms. Doan Thi Phuong, a farm of household implementing an ecological farming model on an area of 660m2. The model focuses on cultivating a variety of colorful vegetables (crops) combined with chicken rearing. A key feature of this model is its transition to environmentally friendly farming practices, committing to reducing and virtually eliminating the use of pesticides since 2023.

Crops, animals found on the site (if farm) and methods, techniques applied:

The main crops found at the site include various vegetables (with increased diversity since 2024) and some fruit trees, along with chickens as livestock. The household owner manually practices ecological farming methods by utilizing readily available local resources, such as using a mixture of garlic, chili, and alcohol as a biological agent to control pests, or applying water soaked with banana stems (rich in Potassium) to irrigate fruit trees. Fertilizer is entirely sourced from organic materials: composting surrounding weeds and grasses and utilizing manure from livestock to create organic fertilizer, which improves soil porosity. The household also applies intensive and intercropping techniques to optimize yield and maintain the natural ecosystem, thereby protecting beneficial insects.

Activities, including trainings offered:

  • Technical support and training
  • Training on CPAM-Biodiversity Monitoring
  • Training on Women Leadership for rural women

Trainings/courses description:

Technical support and training:

  • Key activities at the model include daily ecological farming practices and the self-production of organic agents and fertilizers. Since 2024, the model has received financial support from the Hai Hau District Women’s Union and CGFED to purchase seeds, thereby increasing crop diversity. Most importantly, the household receives in-depth technical support from the project. Specifically, the model is regularly accompanied by the commune’s agricultural officer, who conducts site visits and provides consultation on planting techniques and disease prevention monthly or whenever urgent issues arise.

Training in CPAM-Biodiversity Monitoring:

  • CGFED organized a one-day training course on CPAM, CPAM tools including biodiversity monitoring, agroecology for rural female farmers. Besides, there is also participation of local partners whose roles as learners and supporters for the pioneer group of rural female farmers in pesticide use monitor later.
  • After being trained, the pioneer group of rural female farmers monitored the use of pesticides in the community through CPAM tools and biodiversity monitoring under technical support from the CGFED team.

Training on Women Leadership for rural women:

  • A training on Women Leadership for rural women was conducted by CGFED in collaboration with local partners with participation of 30 female farmers in Hai Xuan commune. Training materials are utilized from the most updated version of training modules on Women Leadership for rural women that had been updated and translated into Vietnamese in March under support from PANAP.
